What is the onboarding process?

Onboarding is the process of integrating and welcoming a new employee into your business or organisation. It’s a tailored process that ensures the necessary paperwork, systems and induction plans are in place to help new employees feel confident and able to fulfil their role to the fullest when they join your business.

What does your onboarding process look like for new employees

Think about your onboarding process. Have you gone all out and got them a personalised notepad, pen, mug and water bottle? Do they have a computer, work desk, mobile phone and email address all set up for them? Or, do they get a polite welcome and then they are given a handbook to read through for the day?

Your business needs to be offering employees a great onboarding process. Just because they have accepted your job offer and turned up on the first day, it doesn’t mean they will come back for a second day.

Research shows that 49% of millennials want a better onboarding process from employers. So, almost half of all millennials are dissatisfied with their new employer’s onboarding process, due to it not meeting their needs or expectations.

Executives from across the globe were surveyed too. It was reported that 32% of them felt they had experienced a poor onboarding process from a previous employer at some point during their working life. Perhaps the key point here is ‘previous employer’?!.

Perhaps a better onboarding process would have meant they were not a previous employer?

It is essential that as an employer you do not ignore the onboarding process. One of the reasons for this is that 22% of staff turnover occurs within the first 45 days of employment. This is within 6 weeks of an employee working with you and when the onboarding process should still be taking place in the form of regular meetings or a buddy scheme, for example.

Businesses with successful onboarding processes also claim that 91% of first year workers are retained. Further to this, it is 69% more likely that a new hire will remain with a company for 3 years or more if there is a well-structured onboarding program in place.
